Life Skills
In the fall of 2009, Giant Steps welcomed its first Adult Day participant in a program designed to place adults with autism in a work environment where they can develop necessary job skills and a achieve greater independence. This pilot program utilizes the strengths of the adult and immerses them in a typical work setting with natural supports.
Adult Day participants work with our staff to help keep Giant Steps operating efficiently and effectively. Typical Adult Day hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Participants work under a direct supervisor and perform a variety of tasks with Giant Steps personnel including:
- Working with our facilities manager on tasks including recycling, vacuuming, taking out garbage, watering plants, and sorting recyclables.
- Assisting the development staff with tasks such as data entry, shredding, mailings, and folding brochures.
- Working with administrative staff on office duties such as creating booklets, laminating papers, cutting PECs books, and unloading and delivering office supplies.
